How

We Work

— A Research-Based Approach —

Overcoming difficulties such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, etc., is not an easy task. Very rarely do simple strategies solve our problems. Instead, we often find ourselves stuck in those same-old distressing feelings or patterns of behaviour, unable to fully realise change and happiness. The problem is that many of our difficulties rest upon deeper emotional issues that we are barely aware of, such as how we feel about ourselves deep inside, and how we treat ourselves.

Therapy with us then involves working with the difficulties you’re experiencing, but also getting to and reworking the deeper emotional issues. To do this, we use research-based therapeutic interventions to help guide you into the difficulties you face, putting words to how you really feel inside, and drawing out those deeper feelings that are locked up inside. There is a wealth of research supporting such methods, demonstrating that it is through this process that relief from distressing symptoms is realised as the underlying emotional problems are reworked. This is change from the inside out.

Common

Difficulties

— How We Might Work Together —

Every person’s difficulties are unique and will require tailed approach. However, research shows that there are commonalities regarding the underlying emotional issues at the centre of common difficulties, and we will use when appropriate research-based interventions.

Depression

At the centre of depression is often a deep sense that one is worthless or unlovable and very painful self-critical messages.

We would help you access and process these painful core feelings, and help you treat yourself with more understanding and compassion.

Anxiety

At the centre of worry and anxiety is a very basic insecurity and sense of aloneness and abandonment in a dangerous world.

We would help you face and work through your deeper fears and frightening memories, and teach you how to calm your worrying thoughts.

Relationship Issues

At the centre of relationship issues is often a fear of rejection and an avoidance tendency, or an anger at being wronged or betrayed and an aggressive tendency.

We would help you understand your interpersonal issues, process the underlying emotions and change your behaviours.

Loss

At the centre of painful loss and bereavement is often a complicated mixture of sadness and unexpressed anger and resentment.

We would help you unpack and voice all your confusing emotions, including the sadness and anger so that you can begin to accept your loss.

Therapy

Steps

— What to Expect from Therapy —

Therapy is tailored to every person, according to the difficulties you may present with, and what your goals and preferences are. That being said, there is a basic structure to therapy with us, which can be thought of as four steps:

Step 1:
Consultation

Therapy begins with a consultation, which you can book online using our online booking form.

In the consultation, you’ll be able to meet with the therapist and begin talking about the difficulties you’re facing and what you’d like to achieve in therapy.

Step 2:
Exploring

Once you’ve completed the consultation and decided to work with us you’ll begin meeting with the therapy on a regular basis.

The therapist will help you explore your difficulties, and will work to draw out any underlying emotional issues that you have. Together you will begin building a clear plan and focus for the therapy based on what is most important to you.

Step 3:
Processing

Once a clear picture of what is going on inside you is formed, work shifts to processing the underlying emotions and processes.

The therapist will help guide through exploring and expressing your deeper emotional pains, and guide you through responding to yourself in a more compassionate and useful way.

Step 4:
Consolidation

Once you begin to experience a change within how you feel about yourself, the focus will shift to ensuring that this change translates into real-world difference.

The therapist will help you integrate the changes you’ve achieved in therapy in real-life situations, processing any obstacles that you have along the way, and consolidate a new way of being with yourself and others.
